#009: Why We All Need Subtitles Now, Your Next EduContent Binge, Secret Math Video

Hi All!

We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com.

This week, we look at one of the best ways to learn back-end development, a short film that touches upon the beauty of calculus, why we all need subtitles now, and more. Let's dive in:

Learn back-end development in a gamified way

One of my friends recently reached out to me, and brought the site boot.dev to my attention. When I had the chance to demo it, I was blown away! The site functions similarly to CryptoZombies in how its designed to teach you back-end development in a fun, gamified way.

There are 21 courses in the core program all the way from learning Python to showing you how to find a programming job. It even goes into advanced courses like Kubernetes, Cryptography, and advanced algorithms which are hot topics of interest. My latest educational binge

Have you ever wondered how cities purify their water supply? Or how a Formula 1 race car works? Maybe you're curious how speakers or electric guitars make their sounds? Animagraffs explores all these topics and more.

Jacob O'Neal, the CEO/Chief Creative Officer behind Animagraffs, makes 3D-animated videos that break down machines we see and use daily in a visual way. Great if you are more of a 'visual-learner' and will surely make you look at the world differently.

"When will I ever need to use this in my life?"

We usually hear the above statement asked by students in math classes, frustrated by the nature of calculus and abstract concepts. math-obsessed alien on YouTube has created one video in the history of their channel, and it has garnered over 1.1 million views.

It's called Calculus in a nutshell. It only lasts three minutes, but it's a beautifully animated short film that shows an appreciation for the artistic side of STEM - "Even if there isn't any point in your life that you'll have to apply calculus to real life problems, isn't the ability to see the world in another language pretty amazing?"

Why we all need subtitles now

This video from Vox caught my attention a few months back, but I was prompted to revisit it after noticing I had been using more subtitles lately.

It dives into the history of audio mixing, some of the physics behind it, and is genuinely interesting to learn about. The video also gives tips on how to improve the sound system in your home and how to configure your setup for optimal sound quality.

Can you crack this game theory puzzle?

You have been stranded on an island. Twelve hungry cannibals line up to meet you. If the first decides to have you for dinner, he leaves himself vulnerable to the next cannibal. But if that cannibal decides to eat the first cannibal, a third one could consume him. Are you doomed, or will the cannibals' desire for self-preservation keep you alive?

This short video from William Spaniel explores the idea of backward induction from game theory and presents it in a fun, understandable way.
