Undiscovered #021: Restoring a Core Childhood Memory, Cardboard Drones, Roomba's Rival

#021: Restoring a Core Childhood Memory, Cardboard Drones, Roomba's Rival

Hi All!

We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com.

This edition is helped in part by the support of Boot.dev. Be sure to check them out in the P.S. for a special signup offer and more information. Let's jump into this week's finds:

The Coolest Research Lab You'll Ever See

Otherlab is an extremely cool accelerator/incubator that works on products ranging from robotics to the cutting edge of renewable energy. There's a lot of companies that claim to do similar things, but they don't always catch my eye.

When I saw the past projects of Otherlab included building their own walking elephant, creating exoskeletons, building cardboard drones and desktop CNC milling machines, I knew they were different. Be sure to check out all the stuff they're working on.

Restoring a Core Memory From Your Childhood

When I was younger, I used to be obsessed with the Falling Sand game. It was an interesting combination between computers and physics that allowed my imagination to run wild.

I recently found two new sites that I would describe as 'updated' versions of that classic game: Orb Farm and Sandspiel Club. These two games allow you to interact with beautifully designed elements and give you a zen-like environment to play in. Huge shoutout to Max Bittker for creating these.

A Robot Better than Roomba?

Let me start off by saying I am not being paid to say this or have an affiliate link to share, but Matic Robots are high on my wish list of items to buy one day. You may be familiar with the Roomba or other robot cleaners, but Matic takes the concept to a whole other level. My favorite part of their site is where Matic takes on cleaning the streets of New York City - amazing stuff.

The Science behind The Sphere

By now, I'm sure you have seen or heard of the massive Las Vegas Sphere. It's an incredible feat of engineering, and arguably one of the most outrageous things built in the history of humanity. But how exactly was it made?

On the Sphere's website, they break down all the science that went into building it. This includes 24 equations spanning from centuries old formulas to 22nd century engineering and technology. Very cool read that will make you look at it in a new way.

A New Blog That Will Make You Think

Levers for Progress dubs itself as 'a living database of methods to advance science and technology'. Besides having a very unique design, I thought it had one of the more thoughtful collection of articles I have found from a blog recently. The posts are short and to the point, and I enjoyed reading their piece about digital nomad visas.

P.S. Have you heard of Boot.dev? One of my friends showed me this recently and when I started to demo it, it blew me away! It's a site that teaches you back-end development in a fun, gamified way. It's helped over 70,000 students learn in-demand technologies like Python, SQL, Go, and a bunch of other advanced topics.
