#030: "They Not Like Us", Insane AI Emoji Generator, 1% Better Every DayHi All! We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com. This edition is helped in part by the support of Boot.dev. Be sure to check them out in the P.S. for a special signup offer and more information. Let's jump into this week's finds: How to Build an App from Engineer GirlfriendI recently came across the account of Engineer Girlfriend on YouTube and immediately went down a rabbit hole of binging her content. On her website, she discusses her experience as a software engineer and product designer at Snap and other startups. Using these skills, she now creates her own apps and documents the process on her channel. My favorite part of her site, though, is her shared Google Doc outlining how to build an app. She walks through the ideation, design, development, deployment, and marketing stages of the process in a refreshingly straightforward way. What Does 1% Improvement Every Day Look Like? This is a famous diagram I first came across in the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. It shows the power of consistency, and what it looks like when you get 1% better (at whatever it is you're doing) every day for a year. Conversely, it also shows you what you look like when you get 1% worse every day for a year. Showing the decline is just as powerful as the improvements, and it's a great reminder that progress occurring in small increments can compound greatly.
Fun, Insane Website I EncounteredSometimes you visit a website and ask yourself, "is this something the world really needs?" Then you start exploring it more. You find interesting things. Some actually turn out to be useful, while others horrify you. This was my experience with AI Emojis I'll be the first to admit: parts of it are extremely fun. It let's you make custom emojis like Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, Lionel Messi, Mr. Bean, red pandas, and more. But the absolute craziest emoji I saw was of Kanye West and Sydney Sweeney kissing. That's right. Feel free to explore this at your own discretion, and be mindful of the ways AI may show up in your life. We'll stick to the red pandas. Napkin Finance - Our Latest ObsessionWhile researching for our latest Instagram post on economies of scale, we came across a wonderful account called Napkin Finance. They themselves have a library of resources dedicated to economics, along with lots of other useful subjects. Other topics they include on their site include things like credit, entrepreneurship, and investing. They even help you plan for major life events like starting a family! "They Not Like Us"If you are online in any capacity, you probably heard about the current feud between musical artists Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Within the last week and a half, they have released multiple songs while becoming engaged in a 'rap battle'. These artistic and commercially successful rappers are, in reality, fighting a war of persuasion. Both artists are using strong emotional appeals to engage and receive fan support. The classic 'ethos' of Kendrick having solo writing credits leads to enhanced credibility in the eyes of the public. The current perception is that Kendrick has swung a large advantage in the battle, especially with the growing popularity behind his song, Not Like Us. They address their songs to each other on an individual level, but the public forum of the event leads to involvement and opinion from outside parties. It may appear that they are looking to inflict damage to other personally in the battle, but the real war is winning the hearts and minds of the people. P.S. Have you heard of Boot.dev?
