#034: Hottest Internet Summer Radios, A Better Pinterest, Making Dark Mode CozyHi All! We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com. This edition is helped in part by the support of Boot.dev. Be sure to check them out in the P.S. for a special signup offer and more information. Let's jump into this week's finds: A Better PinterestIf you are a fan of Pinterest, you are going to love Cosmos.so. It's an excellent tool that allows you to organize and curate your interests visually, serving as a mood board to find your next visual inspiration. In our opinion, it does a better job at finding more niche content than Pinterest, and we use it regularly for our Instagram posts. I constantly find myself exploring the 'clusters' (similar to Pinterest boards) others make and highly recommend checking it out. Interesting Maps and Data VisualizationWith Summer effectively under way, it will be important to be on top of the weather around you. Two of our favorite websites for visualizing weather data are Windy.com and Ventusky. One layer it doesn't include is 'shade', and that is where ShadeMap.app comes in. It let's you visualize the shade of every mountain, building, and tree shadow in the world simulated for any date and time. It's a fascinating project, and be sure to follow the official Twitter account for more updates. Careful Words by Simon SarrisIt's not always easy to find the right words while writing, and that is why Simon Sarris made Careful Words. The site functions similar to a thesaurus, but it labels itself as 'word reference for inspiration'. Simon shared the inspiration behind the name:
What I love about the site is its simple, yet elegant design. I find myself not getting distracted by the rest of the site like some other thesaurus resources or regular Google searches, and there is a high concentration of quality responses. The Hottest Internet Radios for WorkThe temperature outside is heating up, and why not find internet radios to match the vibe? @disco_lu on Twitter shared a website called musicforprogramming.net thats beautiful design is only equalled by its wonderfully curated list of featured music. But we can't just stop there. The #1 internet radio we recommend, and one of our personal favorite sites of all-time, is Poolsuite FM. It is 'the ultra-summer internet radio station, playing an infinity pool of summer sounds 24/7'. We've been a fan of theirs for a long time, and it has been amazing to see the transformation of the brand starting from the radio site to launching their own sunscreen. Cozy Dark Mode DesignWhat if dark mode didn't have to be so..dark? Kristian Wagner explores this idea in their latest post on Twitter, showing off a type of 'mood lightning' that creates a cozy environment while dark mode is being used. This was a fun, different way of thinking about how we can create comforting virtual spaces just like we do with physical ones.
P.S. Have you heard of Boot.dev? One of my friends showed me this recently and when I started to demo it, it blew me away! It's a site that teaches you back-end development in a fun, gamified way. It's helped over 70,000 students learn in-demand technologies like Python, SQL, Go, and a bunch of other advanced topics.
