#087: The Blueberry Billionaire, Creating Magic for Consumers, Craft of MasonryHi All! We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com. This week, we will take a look at some insightful podcasts, sources for being up-to-date with the latest AI and business news, and one of the most impressive masons in the country. Let's dive in: The Blueberry BillionaireOne podcast I started listening to this week is a conversation between Shane Parrish and John Bragg on Parrish's The Knowledge Project. I noticed a tweet Parrish shared from a listener that said: "Hi Shane, The YouTube algorithm recommended your interview with John Bragg and it is the best podcast I have ever listened to. I have listened to it at least 5 times and keep gleaning new insights." But who is John Bragg? I became interested from the tweet but I was sold on the title, "The Blueberry Billionaire". It turns out, John Bragg built an empire that controls half the world's wild blueberries and North America's largest private telecom network. What makes it truly incredible to me, is that he did this all while living from a town of only 1,000 people. Be sure to check out the whole interview here. Creating Magic for ConsumersGreg Isenberg recently tweeted out: "ideas are useless, execution is everything”
i disagree. when ideas become prompts into LLMs, ideas become execution.
ideas are actually everything.
In response to that, Alejandro Navia recommended listening to the John Fio podcast with Patrick O'Shaughnessy's on the Invest Like the Best show. Alejandro claims it's a 'banger episode on exactly this point', and it has immediately entered our queue. For the curious, John's background is in consumer products, bootstrapping and launching four products: Gravity Blanket, Moon Pod, Moon Pals and Birthdate Candles, which have collectively sold hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue. He also has a really unique background that includes starting as a jazz musician, to working with Justin Bieber. Patrick goes on to say the main takeaways from his conversation were points around product positioning, creating magic for consumers, not letting yourself become the product and how to build enduring brands. ColossusA website I recently found was another excellent 'curator' of sorts, called Colossus. The site specializes in finding the best podcasts related to business and investing, and what I love most about their approach is how focused they are in finding and only sharing the best episodes from top quality shows. The John Fio Invest Like the Best episode was actually featured on Colossus above, as well as one of my personal favorites, Founders by David Senra. Other interesting shows I want to check out are Business Breakdowns, 50x, Making Media, and the Founder's Field Guide. Epoch AI - AI Benchmarking HubAs someone who works with AI every day, it's sometimes hard to discern which models are the 'best' and most up to date. I don't see it mentioned all the time on Twitter, but I found a resource called Epoch AI that has tools for this exact purpose. What I love most about Epoch AI are the visualizations for all of its latest research. My personal favorite is the AI Benchmarking Hub, where you can not only see what current models are leading, but all the historic benchmarks as well. The data is available to be used by the general public, and its refreshing to have such a clean source to go back to for quickly being aware of the latest in AI models.
