#099: Mastery-Based Flashcard App, New YouTube Trends, Inspiration Behind First Apple Stores

Hi All!

We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com.

This week, we will take a look at a mastery-based flashcard app, an interesting trend in YouTube content, the inspiration behind the first Apple stores, and more.

Let's dive in:

Mastery-Based Flashcard App

Schema is one of the most exciting education apps currently being built. I first came across them after seeing one of their replies to Justin Skycak on Twitter, and immediately fell down the rabbit hole of wanting to know more about what they were up to.

After reading their manifesto, I realized they were building the exact kind of product I had been considering creating myself: a spaced repetition tool designed for compounding knowledge and drawing insights across different subjects. Naturally, I signed up for early access and soon had the opportunity to chat with founder Alain Chuard.

We discussed the features currently available in the app, their plans for the future, and possible ways to make it even better. I hope some of my ideas make the cut, but even if they don’t, I’m thrilled to see where the Schema team goes from here and how they continue to grow!

Apps like Schema prove that there’s never been a better time to learn anything you’ve always been curious about.

Trend Towards (Extra) Long Form YouTube Content

Colin and Samir shared an insight that I started to notice myself: creators on YouTube are starting to make longer and longer types of content. This isn't just typical long-form video; these are 30 to 45 minute videos that rival traditional television programming. For the past six months, more people have watched YouTube on their TVs than Netflix or Disney.

What started as a platform with a hard ten minute cut off time is now pushing to see who can keep viewers hooked the longest. With near ultimate accessibility, YouTube is simultaneously the most competitive yet influential platform in the world of distribution today.

Inspiration Behind First Apple Stores

I have always found it fascinating to learn where people considered icons discovered inspiration for their projects. In the case of Steve Jobs and Apple, a major influence I recently came across was Negozio Olivetti. This tweet features an image of one Olivetti store from 1966, almost 35 years before the first Apple Store opened. There are also images from a company called MEA Interiör.

Many times, we tend to think of genius as existing on its own, but great creators are often shaped by the people, places, and ideas around them. When we realize that those regarded as the greatest builders were inspired by others, it becomes easier to believe that anyone is capable of creating amazing things.

Twitter Advice Straight From Head of Product

How to make money on Twitter/X, straight from the horse's mouth Nikita Bier (Head of Product, X):

If you want to get rich on X, it isn't going to be through creator revenue or meme coins.
Instead, think about one subject matter that you know more about than anyone else in the world. It can be anything: plumbing, menswear, Indian food, furniture, social apps, whatever.
Post one unexpected insight you picked from your experience in that area. Keep it under 5 sentences. Do this every day for 6 months.
If you stick to it, we will promote your account to others.
By the end, you will be recognized as the world's leading expert in that subject area and you can charge whatever you want for endorsements, your time, or whatever. And no one will be able to take that way from you.

Naval Latest Wisdom

Naval has been on a heater recently, and dropped absolute gems on a myriad of topics. Here are a few:

On Experience

The purest reason to make something is not to make money and not even to make the thing.

It’s to have the experience of making the thing - and no one can take that from you.

On His 'Formula'

My “formula.”
• Write down something that you experientially, deeply know to be true and was not obvious to you earlier.
• Remove every extra word. Use simple words.
• Ignore how your followers may react. Never write for the audience.

On Starting a Company

Starting a company is solving a simultaneous equation - you’re convincing the money that you have the talent, and the talent that you have the money.

On Crazy Things Being Said

If your smartest friends start saying crazy things - pay attention. A paradigm shift may be underway.

On Why Writing is the Final Frontier

Good writing is the output of good thinking.

(Why AI hasn’t taken over X).

And Finally...

It’s not the art we fall in love with - it’s the artist.
