#102: Don't Go Viral - Become a Legend, Smart and Leveraged, AI Won't Make You RichHi All! We are pleased to welcome you to this week's edition of Undiscovered, a newsletter with exclusive resources and insights expanding from the material found on our main site - becketu.com. This week, we will take a look at a winning, long-term social media mindset, what Naval says is the key to unlocking extreme wealth today, a historic Japanese magazine releasing their first English edition, and more. Let's dive in: Don't Go Viral, Become a Legend@AniC_dev shared the following:
I believe this reveals a truth that often goes overlooked. We are constantly bombarded with the latest individuals and companies that have hit the viral nerve on social media. Sometimes these moments of virality are sustained, but most of the time it is purely regarded as hype. There is something much more gratifying and sustainable about the mindset of trying to become a 'legend' in one's field. Visakan Veerasamy is one of the most consistent posters on Twitter/X from the last ten years, and his approach shows the effects of relatively slow, long-term growth. Greatness and legendary status are achieved through regular displays of competency. In the chart, it mentions "virality can happen because you just make cool stuff but might also not", along with a follow up: "sustained growth & value creation backed by compounding on: social + users (word of mouth), tech moat (increasingly crazy shit you build), and memetic convergence (on your way to become an art classic). In a world obsessed and constantly chasing virality, we should look towards consistency and steady growth, with a side effect of going viral. Smart and Leveraged is the True Path to Wealth@StartupArchive_ shared a Naval gem from one of his latest interviews with @zfellows: “Leverage is a force-multiplier for your work. The oldest form of leverage is labor (you have people working with you or for you). Then it was capital (you’re investing money behind a problem). Then it was media (you’re writing a book and people are listening to you and your words are moving many people to do things)… Then code came along. Code is this incredible, permissionless form of leverage where you have robots and data centers cranking away for you. And now the leverage is increasing through AI, agents, robots, supply chains, 3D printing, and all the things you can do to amplify your work.” Naval reflects on the claim that there will be 1-person, billion-dollar companies and points out that there actually already have been: Minecraft and Bitcoin were both 1-person projects. “The leverage will just continue to increase, which means non-linear returns.” Naval explains. And he points out that this has important societal implications: “Society is just not built to handle that. You can see all of the outcry against the rich getting richer and billionaires and all that, but it’s not really that the richer are getting richer. It’s that the smart and leveraged are getting richer. If you’re smart, and you’re highly-leveraged, you’re knowledge-creation power (earning-power is downstream of knowledge) is so much higher than your peers that you may have left behind in college and they just have no idea what’s coming. It’s going to be a kind of crazy time.” Japanese Popeye Magazine First English EditionPopeye magazine recently released it's first-ever all-English issue in its 49 year history. For those unfamiliar, Popeye is a monthly men's fashion and culture magazine that touts itself as the "Magazine for City and Boys". Starting in 1976, it's recognized as introducing American youth culture to Japanese audiences and is Japan's longest-running men's fashion magazine. There aren't many details I'm able to gather from the contents of what's inside this edition, but the cover shows the text 'Hello, Tokyo! A guide for Exploring Japan's Capital City'. The cover features a Godzilla View Room at the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku, along with what looks like a teen going through Godzilla comics and books on Tokyo. If you're interested in securing a copy for yourself, you can find that here. AI Will Not Make You Rich"For decades, the way to make money was to bet on what the new thing was. Now, you have to bet on the opportunities it opens up." This is the final line from retired venture investor, Jerry Neumann, on his latest Colossus article, "AI Will Not Make You Rich". In the opening paragraphs, Neumann continues to write: Anyone who invests in the new new thing must answer two questions: First, how much value will this innovation create? And second, who will capture it? I think the above statement may be one of the most overlooked and important to consider whenever a new, shiny technology enters the early adopter to early majority adopters phase. Neumann goes on to say that breakthrough technologies like the railroad and microprocessor lead to innovation and new fortunes, but not everything lead to big profits. He says that with AI, most value will likely go to the consumers. The real winners are those who use AI to cut costs and improve services, rather than building the technology itself. For investors, the smartest bets are on businesses that leverage AI to unlock new efficiencies in areas like healthcare and education. The key thing to remember here, is the bet is not on the model providers. Just as it was mentioned before, the direction is to go towards whatever opportunities open up. New David Senra PodcastDavid Senra is your favorite podcaster's favorite podcaster (at least if you listen to a lot of history/business pods). He caught me totally off guard when he announced that he will be starting another podcast, this time, called David Senra. Besides being a bit like the Marc Jacobs meme, I can't wait to listen to this. On Founders, David is usually poring through biographies and rare books on some of the historically most accomplished founders in the world. On David Senra, it looks like he will be sitting down and chatting with some of the most most influential current founders in the world. Daniel Ek, Michael Dell, Brad Jacobs, Todd Graces, and Michael Ovitz are just a few of the first founders David will be interviewing. It's an interesting addition to his repertoire, and a departure from his typical solo podcasting setup. His does have experience being featured on other podcasts like Invest Like the Best, and this will certainly be one of the next best podcasts in the world.
